Chavalon Thermal Power Plant and Limestone Escarpment
Caption
The former Chavalon Thermal Power Plant occupies a high terrace above Vouvry in the Valais. It was commissioned in 1965 as Switzerland’s sole oil-fired power station and ceased operation in 1999.

Its location above the Rhône Valley was part of the plant’s engineering context: the industrial platforms, cooling system, chimney and associated housing were fitted into a steep, geologically complex mountainside.

The surviving complex records a period when oil-fired generation was used to reinforce Switzerland’s predominantly hydroelectric electricity system, especially during winter demand peaks.
